The Spirit of Teranga: Why the World of Sport Will Fall in Love with Senegal at Dakar 2026

Senegal is the “country of Teranga,” a complex and central value in the daily life of the West African nation.

Teranga, also written as Teraanga, is a word coined from the local Wolof dialect, and encompasses the warmth, generosity and sharing that are at the heart of Senegalese life.

The spirit Teranga will surely come to life when Senegal welcomes the world to its biggest sporting event ever, the fourth Youth Olympic Games (YOG), Dakar 2026 .

Athletes and fans will see a distinct brand of respect and hospitality that has become part of the way of life for most of Senegal's 16 million people over the decades: "People are always happy to helpDes supporters sénégalais acclamant leur équipe de football lors de la Coupe du monde de football 2018.Senegalese fans cheering for their football team during the 2018 FIFA World Cup.Senegalese fans cheering for their football team during the 2018 FIFA World Cup. What is the origin of Teranga?

L’origine de Teranga The origin of Teranga remains unknown, but it has been widely associated with the country's history of colonization and slavery between the 15th and 20th centuries.

Shared suffering brought people together, a spirit that was further glorified by the country's first president, Leopold Sedar Senghor.

Sengor is believed to have defended the Teranga as a means of uniting Senegalese people regardless of their religion, tribe, ethnic group or culture.

Cet esprit est depuis devenu une identité nationale et la plupart des équipes sportives nationales comme l’équipe de football, les Lions de Teranga, ont inventé leurs noms autour de la vertu.
