A global star who rose to viral fame through his silent, universal humor, Khaby Lame now joins the ranks of the event’s official ambassadors.
Paradoxically expressive, warm, and inquisitive, he achieved worldwide recognition without uttering a single word. Content creator and influencer Khaby Lame is the latest ambassador for Dakar 2026. “This commitment reflects my desire to support young African talent in sport and far beyond. Dakar 2026 will allow our continent to showcase its best, to inspire young people in Africa and around the world. It’s an opportunity to prove that, in addition to being resilient, Africa is also strong. I am proud to be Senegalese, proud to be African, and we will make this first Olympic event in Africa a complete success.,” he said following his appointment.
Khaby Lame was born in 2000 in Dakar to Senegalese parents originally from Mbacké, a town in the country’s central-western region. His family emigrated to Italy while he was still an infant, settling in the Turin area, where they lived in modest circumstances for several years.
Growing up, he pursued football at an amateur level, playing for a number of local clubs.
Without saying a word
In 2020, the world was gripped by the COVID-19 pandemic. Populations went into lockdown, industries ground to a halt, and countless workers lost their jobs—including Khaby Lame, then employed as a machine operator in a factory near Turin.
To fill his days, he began creating videos, particularly for the social media platform TikTok. He staged himself simplifying unnecessarily complicated tutorials, exposing the absurdity of certain practices. His style quickly became unmistakable : he barely speaks, relying instead on highly expressive facial reactions and gestures.
A global success story
A winning formula : the absence of dialogue made his videos universally accessible. His content propelled him to become one of the most-followed individuals on TikTok and across social media. His videos are widely shared, adapted, and recreated. His now-iconic gesture has even been dubbed the “Khaby Lame gesture.”
A viral phenomenon, Khaby Lame rapidly expanded his reach across the globe from the United States to India while maintaining a particularly strong resonance on the African continent that shaped his origins.
Over the years, he has successfully transformed viral fame into sustained global success. Today, he collaborates with major brands and international figures such as Snoop Dogg, Idris Elba, and Lionel Messi, while remaining deeply committed to youth engagement, particularly across Africa.
Committed to youth
Across Africa, Khaby Lame has become a symbol for an entire generation. Years after the viral breakthrough that made him a global star, he remains profoundly dedicated to young people. Appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF in 2025, he actively leads campaigns supporting underprivileged communities and participates in charitable initiatives.
As an ambassador for Dakar 2026, Khaby Lame renews his commitment to younger generations. He will help amplify the voice of the Youth Olympic Games, take part in flagship events such as the Torch Relay across Senegal, and inspire youth nationwide. Children from Mbacké, his hometown, will also have the opportunity to attend the Games, scheduled to take place in Dakar, Saly, and Diamniadio from October 31 to November 13.
